One-way mirror room (Gesell chamber)

By · Published · Updated

An observation room separated from the interview room by a one-way mirror, from which the brand's team watches the session unseen.

Why does it matter for a brand?

It is the classic way to live a focus group: the team watches, listens and comments while the group talks, without stepping in. Latin America calls it a Gesell chamber, after the psychologist Arnold Gesell. Seeing a person explain live why they would not buy changes more minds inside a company than many reports. Its limit is what stays afterwards: it depends on the notes of whoever watched and on how the audio was recorded, and in a group, room audio is not enough to know who said each sentence.

How does WAV handle it?

We work in a 360 room in Santiago, Chile. The brand can follow the session live, and a 360 camera also records the whole room while each participant wears their own microphone, so every quote in the report keeps its speaker and its minute. We compare both formats in one-way mirror or 360 room.

What should you ask before a study?
